Gareth Burge said: “We were very pleased to be asked to advise Peter and Stephen Short on the sale of CJN which has been writing personal and commercial insurance for over 60 years.

Peter Short said: “It was a question of picking the right home for the continued development of the businesses and Stephen and I had watched County develop its successful model through the acquisition of successful local brokers.

City hire for Thursfields as new Head of Employment department joins

Thursfields Solicitors has head-hunted a top lawyer from a large, global legal firm to become Head of its Employment department.

Helena Morrissey will join Thursfields next month after spending the last 14 years with Squire Patton Boggs (formerly Hammonds), where she started as an Assistant Solicitor and left as a Director in its Labour & Employment team.

Her experience has seen her act for a wide range of commercial clients, from small family businesses to household name corporates, covering the full range of employment law services.

Michelle O’Hara, Commercial and HR Director of Thursfields, said: “We’re really pleased to welcome Helena to the company to lead our employment practice.

“Helena is the second key growth hire in as many months for our Employment Team.  We have built a team of seven employment law specialists based across our regional network.  We have the depth and breadth of expertise to advise employers of all sizes on their employment law and HR issues.

Helena initially studied music at the University of Birmingham and worked as a researcher and producer for BBC Radio 3 in the 1990s. She then retrained part time for four years as a lawyer at UWE Bristol, qualifying in 2003.

Helena said: “Having spent many years at a large, global law firm, I felt it was time for a change.

“I wanted to work for a firm that offers me the autonomy to make my own decisions and to implement my own ideas and business plans, and Thursfields felt right to me.

“I was attracted by the collaborative and enterprising culture at Thursfields, and I think the firm’s vision, values and aspirations align with my own.”

Helena, who lives in Shirley, is a founder member and current Chair of Friends of Shirley Park, and a member of Shirley Street Watch.

She also serves as a governor at Our Lady of the Wayside RC Primary School and has just become a trustee of the Solihull School Parents’ Association.

Helena added: “I’m very much looking forward to heading up the employment team at Thursfields.

“It’s a fantastic team and I’m looking forward to working with my new colleagues to develop and expand the reach and profile of the employment team and building on the excellent reputation that the team has achieved to date.”

Women’s football club secures at Solihull ground until 2030, thanks to Thursfields

A women’s football club has secured the use of its Solihull ground until 2030, thanks to specialist advice from Thursfields Solicitors.

Thursfields has arranged a ten year lease for Leafield Athletic Ladies FC to continue playing at Dickens Heath Sports Club, on Rumbush Lane, Earlswood, which is owned by Tanworth and Camp Hill Cricket Club.

John McCormack is general manager of Leafield Athletic, whose first team competes in Division One Midlands of the FA Women’s National League.

He explained that although the women’s club had been going since 1997, until now they had been on a 12-month rolling contract at Rumbush Lane.

Mr McCormack said: “We’re now running six teams at Leafield Athletic, ranging from girls as young as seven to women in their 30s, and the uptake from people wanting to take part is getting stronger and stronger.

“We wanted to have our use of the splendid ground at Rumbush Lane put onto a more secure footing to allow us to become more adventurous in our future planning.

“Rob Pettigrew at Thursfields’ Solihull office has already been so supportive of the club and the company is the current shirt sponsor of our Under-18s, so I mentioned to him that we might need their help.

“Rob gave us great expert advice and literally handled the whole lease for us from start to finish. We’re very grateful to Thursfields, and it’s great for our club to have such meaningful support from a local business.”

Mr McCormack added: “Now we have the new lease in place we’ve refurbished the clubhouse and have development plans, including improvements to the changing rooms.”

Robert Pettigrew is a director of the Commercial Property department at Thursfields, specialising in the retail and leisure sector.

He said: “Thursfields is determined to put something back into the communities where our offices are based, and we’ve been delighted to support Leafield Athletic in many different ways over the years.

“When we realised they needed our specialist advice on their new lease, we were only too happy to help out, as that is something we could provide professionally for them.

“We now look forward to watching the club’s continued growth and to carry on as one of their main sponsors for the next season.”

Thursfields Solicitors, one of the Midlands’ fastest growing law firms, has announced senior promotions for seven of its top lawyers.

Lorna Tipple, Philip Rea and Stephen Rome have all been promoted to the position of director at the company.

Ms Tipple initially trained at Thursfields 15 years ago and, after a wealth of experience at other firms and running her own practice, she returned to the company last year as an associate director in the Family Law department.

Divorce specialist Mr Rea joined Thursfields’ Family Law department as a senior associate in 2018, while Mr Rome joined the company as a senior associate in the Dispute Resolution department in the same year.

Nick O’Hara, managing director at Thursfields, said: “I am very pleased to announce the promotions of Lorna, Philip and Stephen to the position of director.

“They have all made a great contribution to the business since they joined us and I am sure they will continue to do so.”

Thursfields has also announced the promotions of Louise Jones, Laura Williams, James Monk and Stewart Coles to the position of associate director.

Ms Jones joined Thursfields as a senior associate and head of Residential Property in 2016, and has been head of New Homes since 2017.

Ms Williams arrived as a solicitor in the Family Law department in 2016 and since then has been promoted to associate and senior associate level.

Mr O’Hara said: “Louise, Laura, James and Stewart have made and are still all making a very valuable contribution to the business and fully deserve this recognition.”

He added: “The economy is going through the most challenging of times and to be able to announce the promotion of lawyers of this very high calibre in our business is a very positive message that we are sending to the market place.

“In short: we are here, and we have quality lawyers who are fully equipped with the right experience to give you the best legal advice.”

Thursfields appointed to advise new management team after West Midlands IT firm buyout

Thursfields Solicitors has been appointed to provide ongoing legal support following a management buyout of a West Midlands-based IT business.

The directors, David Ghosh, Jack Robinson and Alex Mackay, have acquired Total Distribution Ltd for an undisclosed sum from retiring owners and founders David and Tracey Mackay. The sellers were advised by Knights plc and the purchasers by VWV.

Established in 1989, Total Distribution Ltd provides IT services and consultancy to a growing number of small and medium sized businesses across the West Midlands and surrounding regions.

As part of the deal and reorganisation of the business, the company has moved from Birmingham to The Alcora Building on Mucklow Hill, Halesowen.

David Ghosh said: “We have ambitions to grow the business and the Covid-19 pandemic has made business owners and managers much more aware of the full potential of their IT systems.

“Over the past three months, we have seen people changing the way they work and seeking to maximise the impact of IT on their business. From setting up employees to work remotely and helping them facilitate new ways of working such as meetings on Microsoft Teams – these are all new skills that most have had to learn very quickly.

“Our growth to date has been based on excellent customer service which has in turn driven client referrals.

“Establishing a new management team provides us with the opportunity to take Total Distribution Ltd to the next level. We currently employ five people, but I can see that number growing as we continue to expand the business.

“Our key strengths over larger competitors is that we work as a team and so we all know our clients’ systems and business and can advise no matter who takes the call or email.

“And our methodical approach is welcomed by clients, some of whom had had no reason to challenge the way they worked in years. In the past, working from home was something that may have been frowned upon, but now it is very much the ‘new normal’.

“Total’s pragmatic approach is designed first and foremost to help businesses find a ‘better way’ of working,” he said.

The decision to instruct Thursfields to provide ongoing support was driven by the service and responsiveness of corporate director Philip Chapman and the team at Thursfields’ Black Country Hub nearby in Halesowen.

Mr Ghosh said: “Philip prepared legal documentation relating to our shareholdings, directorship and company constitution for the future management and ownership of the company. We were impressed with how Philip and his colleagues responded under time pressure and are pleased to have such customer-focused legal advice readily to hand from their Halesowen office.”

Philip Chapman said: “Given how businesses have been driven to maximise the potential of their IT systems, David, Jack and Alex are in an ideal position to drive the growth of the business in the coming years.

“Demand for focused, practical IT solutions and advice has never been stronger, and we wish them well in the future and look forward to working alongside them as the business grows.”

Logistics company founder buys back business

A West Midlands entrepreneur has taken back control of the international logistics firm he founded in 2012, with help from Thursfields Solicitors and Accountants and Business Advisors HB&O.

Peter Ackrill, a 20% shareholder in Logik Logistics International Ltd based at Birmingham International Park, Solihull, has acquired the 80% shareholding held by Chapman Freeborn International Ltd for an undisclosed sum.

The deal was negotiated by Greg Philp, Corporate Finance Director at HB&O in Warwickshire and legal advice was provided by the corporate team at Thursfields Solicitors, led by corporate director Tim Edwards supported by Reece De-Vaney.

From agreeing heads of terms, the deal moved quickly and was completed within a month.

Peter Ackrill said: “Thanks to the commercial sense and keen understanding of the business by Greg Philp at HB&O and Tim Edwards at Thursfields, we were able to progress this transaction quickly, and to the satisfaction of all parties.

“Tim Edwards has been my corporate lawyer for the better part of 15 years and I appreciate his calm approach and wise guidance.”

Tim Edwards, corporate director at Thursfields Solicitors, said: “I have acted for Peter Ackrill for many years, and we are delighted to have assisted him with the buyout. All parties worked extremely hard to get the deal done in a short timeframe.

“I have worked with Greg Philp at HB&O for around ten years and this marks the latest in a long line of transactions we have worked on together.

“I am confident that Peter Ackrill will continue to grow and develop the business going forward and look forward to supporting him along the way.”

Greg Philp of HB&O said: “It was fantastic being able to support Peter with the purchase of Logik. I know the business means a great deal to him, personally, which has made the experience all the more rewarding.

“It is testament to the strength of the company, and Peter’s hard work and determination, that we were able to complete the deal in difficult circumstances.

“I am grateful to Tim for asking me to assist him with this transaction. He and I have known each other for a long time and his pragmatic approach always makes the process enjoyable to work on”

Logik Logistics International currently has 17 employees but Mr Ackrill envisages this growing over the coming years.

The business provides freight forwarding for time-critical deliveries to the automotive and other manufacturing sectors.

Duncan McDonald from Taylor Wessing LLP acted for Chapman Freeborn International Ltd.

Jordan Glynne-Jones and Luke Doran, who launched Blakedown Car Company in 2015, have now tripled their showroom space and doubled their overall footprint by taking the premises opposite their car dealership in Heath Mill Close in Wombourne.

The business sells performance and sports cars including top marques such as Porsche, Mercedes AMG, Aston Martin, and Audi as well as US muscle cars such as a Chevrolet Camaro and Ford Mustang.

Thursfields director Tony Gibb, who is head of commercial property, said: “I was very pleased to be involved in the further expansion of Blakedown Car Company.

“They have found themselves a niche market and they are well known within it, providing the right products and excellent customer service.

“I wish them the very best with their latest expansion and was pleased that myself and Holly Kisiel in the commercial Property Team were able to assist them in their growth.”

Jordan Glynne-Jones, director of Blakedown Car Company, said: “Although we are currently having to operate online only due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we are looking long term and following through on our business plan which was mapped out last year.

“We were very pleased with the legal advice and support from Tony Gibb and Holly Kisiel in helping to bring the next stage in our expansion to fruition, and we look forward to welcoming back customers old and new when lockdown is eased in the future.”

Thursfields Talk Legal: new vidcast series launched by Midlands law firm

One of the Midlands’ leading law firms has launched a series of remotely recorded vidcasts to help increase businesses and the wider public’s understanding of legal issues.

“Thursfields Talk Legal” is the name of the new series that will cover everything from legacy planning to matrimonial disputes, and from commercial property issues to employment law.

Each episode is planned and recorded by ASAP PR, a media agency which uses its journalistic experience to explore each theme via in-depth interviews.

Once recorded, the video episodes are being broadcast on Thursfields’ website, with links sent across the company’s social media and marketing networks.

The initiative is filmed and produced entirely online using the latest technology to avoid unnecessary contact, making sure that Thursfields conforms to the government’s social distancing guidance.

Michelle O’Hara, commercial director at Thursfields, said: “We’re always thinking of ways to widen the audience for our legal guidance, and until now have regularly held free workshops for businesses and the community.

“These have obviously paused due to COVID-19 and so we were keen to continue our outreach efforts using technology.

“Primarily, this is to increase both business and the wider public’s knowledge of a range of legal issues that are pertinent at this time.

“Seeking legal advice might be a new or daunting experience for some. Our videos feature the lawyers themselves and this will hopefully help put our clients at ease as well as inform them about the steps they may need to take if they have a legal issue.”

The first Thursfields Talk Legal episode is called “Making a Will” and involves Deborah Beal, an associate solicitor in the Wills & Estates department, explaining why Wills are needed and how to go about making them. This can be viewed here: https://www.thursfields.co.uk/thursfields-talk-legal-wills-estates/.

Each episode will last for between six and ten minutes, and others in the pipeline will be exploring divorce and finance, commercial property and corporate issues.

Andy Skinner, managing director of ASAP PR, said: “Our approach to creating stories for our clients has always been highly journalistic, making sure we produce interviews that are newsworthy so that the media wants to use them.

“These vidcasts are approached entirely in this manner – quickly asking Thursfields lawyers direct questions about legal topics to result in succinct answers that are both interesting and informative to watch.”

Mrs O’Hara added: “Our lawyers have done a fantastic job at adapting to social distancing requirements whilst still delivering a first-rate service to our clients.”
