Likewise supporting industry initiative boost carpet recycling figures
The UK’s fastest growing distributor of floor coverings and matting is backing an industry initiative to boost the amount of carpet waste that is recycled rather than sent to landfill.
Likewise Group plc is a core funder and member of Carpet Recycling UK which has boosted the proportion of carpets being repurposed as a resource rather than waste from just 2% in 2007 to over 70% in 2020 – a total of 1.7 million metric tonnes, and equivalent to 105,132 football pitches.
Tony Brewer, chief executive of Birmingham-based Likewise Group plc, said: “We are proud to support Carpet Recycling UK, a not-for-profit membership association working to reduce the amount of carpet waste being sent to landfill.”
Members include businesses and organisations from every stage of the carpet supply chain, together with recyclers and equipment providers. Carpet Recycling UK works with businesses in the supply chain, government and academia to foster collaborations and networks to achieve viable, market-based solutions, and encourages design for recyclability.
The latest figures for UK-wide carpet recycling are expected to be shared at the organisation’s AGM which will be held at St John’s Hotel in Solihull on 21 and 22 June 2023.
Tony Brewer added: “There is around 470,000 tonnes of carpet waste in the UK annually, and Carpet Recycling UK is a vital initiative in driving sustainability across the industry.
“We welcome both the opportunity to participate and also to support as a core funder this important move to identify domestic and commercial carpet waste as a resource and potential fuel source.”
Carpet Recycling UK, based in Cheadle Hulme, Stockport, has grown since its inception to represent and communicate with over 120 members, representing over half the industry.
Likewise Group includes Likewise Rugs & Matting, Floors by Lewis Abbott, H&V Carpets, Valley Wholesale Carpets and Delta Carpets as well as Likewise-branded divisions in the north, north-east, Midlands, south and south-east and Scotland.
