Property agents John Truslove help new pie and mash shop serve up traditional grub in Studley

Fledgling food entrepreneur Adam Boswell is launching his first venture by bringing the delights of traditional pie & mash to folk in Warwickshire and Worcestershire.

Helped by the team at commercial property agents John Truslove, Adam is set to open Pie, Mash & More in a former sandwich bar in Studley later this month.

The café was inspired by Adam’s passion for pie & mash, kindled during his time working in Essex.

“I just got a real taste for it during my four years working there,” he said.

“I must have been eating pie, mash and liquor six nights out of seven. I came back home and couldn’t find it anywhere, so I decided the West Midlands needed pie and mash.”

Pie and mash shops have been serving up hearty fare to the working class people of East London and Essex since the early 1800s. A recent revival in taste for traditional food has seen surging demand for the pies, with their minced beef filling, mash and the green parsley gravy known as “liquor”.

Adam said: “I’ve worked in sales most of my life, but my dad Kevin – who’s a plumber – had always talked to me about getting together to run a takeaway or food business, so we decided to finally do it.

“We looked at a place in Bromsgrove town centre but then we heard Sherlocks Sandwich Bar in Studley was closing. We talked to Ben Truslove at the property agents, John Truslove, and found it would be half the cost. It just made sense.

“Ben has been absolutely fantastic and really helpful through the whole process of securing the lease and getting the property ready.

“It was already set up as a food business, but we have brought in new ovens and kitchen equipment. We’re just sorting stock and we’ll be ready to open, hopefully on Saturday 10 June.”

To ensure he offers customers the best possible taste, Adam is sourcing his pies from Goddard’s in Kent, a family firm that has been making pie, mash and liquor since 1890.

“It’s all been personally taste-tested and approved,” said Adam.

“Most of the trade will be takeaway but we will have seating for up to a dozen people to dine in, and the position gives us a lot of passing traffic.”

Ben Truslove, joint managing director of John Truslove, helped Adam secure a three-year tenancy on the 409 sq ft premises at 69 Alcester Road, in Studley, at £9,000 per year.

Ben said: “Adam and his father have put a lot of work and research into opening this new business and I am sure the people of Warwickshire and Worcestershire will soon discover a taste for pie and mash. We wish them every success.
